A new rumor has emerged while Apple enthuasists have been waiting for Snow Leopard as well as the news that Apple will be releasing a tablet pc.

The following has been quoted from Macworld.co.uk:

Tech Web site All Things Digital, claims “multiple music industry sources” say Apple executives have told them the company is planning a keynote event for the week of 7 September.

The suggestion is Apple plans to unveil new iPods, a September tradition, with or without cameras, along with iTunes 9, potentially with new social networking functions and Blu-Ray support, and a new music format in Cocktail.

The Financial Times recently suggested EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group are joining forces with Apple on the new music project.

All Things Digital believes Cocktail will offer extra value for money, with attractive digital goodies bundled with music tunes, potentially enticing those who prefer to pay nothing for downloads.

‘Interactive books’ would feature content such as cover art, lyrics and even the sleeve notes and could be played outside of iTunes.

The Web site also believes the event could be a most welcome return for music fan and Apple CEO Steve Jobs, back at work since June after a leave of absence on medical grounds. As of yet Jobs has been maintaining a low profile, with the exception of the odd Coldplay gig and quote or two in Apple press announcements.

The BBC also points out that a potential 7 September Apple event would be a week before Microsoft unveils its new Zune HD portable music and movies player, which though barely competition for the iPod, especially in the UK, would still give Apple an advantage over Microsoft.

Any iPod refresh launch could act as a spoiler with Apple taking an early lead in the run up to the important ‘holidays’ shopping period.

EDIT:

UPDATE:

Following on from the article I have just noticed that one or two of the albums I downloaded from iTunes recently have come with ‘Digital Booklets’. Could Cocktail be in BETA or being applied/tested to/on random albums?
